UK gambling licensing explained

Any casino or sportsbook that legally accepts customers in Great Britain must hold an operating licence from the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) — the statutory body responsible for regulating commercial gambling in Great Britain under the Gambling Act 2005. If a site targeting UK players cannot be found on the Commission's public register, that is a serious warning sign, not a minor technicality.

• The Gambling Commission maintains a free, searchable public register of every licensed operator, the entity holding each licence, and which activities it covers.
• Remote (online) operators typically hold separate licensed activities for different products — for example a "Remote Casino" licence for slots/table games and a separate "Remote General Betting" licence for sports betting — sometimes under different linked legal entities within the same group.
• All licensees must follow the Commission's Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice (LCCP); the current edition took effect on 6 April 2026.
• The register also lists regulatory actions and public statements against an operator, when they exist. A licensed operator is not automatically an operator with a clean history — check both the licence status and the regulatory-action history.

How to check a licence yourself

1. Search the operator's name on the Gambling Commission's public register.
2. Confirm the registered entity actually matches the brand and domain you're using (large groups often run several linked entities for different products).
3. Check whether the licence status is shown as active, and whether any regulatory actions are listed.

What licensing does — and doesn't — tell you

A current, active UKGC licence means an operator is legally permitted to offer gambling to GB customers and is subject to the Commission's ongoing supervision, including licence conditions on fairness, anti-money laundering controls and player protection. It does not mean the operator has a perfect track record — the public register itself often lists past enforcement action even against currently well-established, actively licensed brands.
