How we rate
Behindthewager does not use a numeric rating system — no scores out of 10, no star ratings, no hidden weighted formula. We think a single number hides more than it reveals about a decision as personal as which operator to use. Instead, every page explains its reasoning in plain language and links to what we checked.
What we investigate
For every operator we cover, we look at:
- Licensing — is the operator on the UK Gambling Commission's public register, under which entity, and with what licence status and history?
- Ownership — who actually operates and owns the brand, and has that changed recently?
- Payments and withdrawals — what methods are offered, and what does the operator itself say about processing times and limits?
- KYC and verification — what does the operator say it requires, and when?
- Product — casino games, providers, live casino and/or sportsbook coverage where relevant.
- Responsible gambling tools — what safer-gambling controls does the operator provide?
Source hierarchy
We prefer, in this order: the regulator; the operator's own published terms and pages; a game provider's own documentation; our own public observation of a product; and, last, third-party sources — including industry press and comparison sites — used only to corroborate or add context, never as the primary basis for a licensing or regulatory claim.
Verification states
Every factual claim we publish is implicitly one of: Verified (confirmed against an authoritative primary source), Observed (stated publicly by a relevant source), or Not verified — meaning we looked and could not confirm it from a source we trust, so we say so instead of guessing. We do not silently upgrade a "not verified" fact to a positive claim.
What we don't currently do
We do not yet perform hands-on testing (real deposits, withdrawals, or live support contact) on any operator covered here — any future review that includes hands-on testing will say so explicitly and explain what was actually done. We do not currently have a numeric or ranking score of any kind. Editorial ranking on our Money Pages, where it exists, reflects our own reasoning at the time of publication and is explained on the page itself — it is never for sale, and no commercial relationship changes a licence fact, a regulatory record, or a listed watch-out.
